A Rich Future for Finder of the Atocha Treasure
Treasure hunting is alive and well in this day and age, and seems to be have become a profitable business. The Atocha treasure and Mel Fisher, with his metal detector, are prime examples of that. The Atocha treasure is actually the cargo of a sunken Spanish ship from the early 17th century that was carrying a large shipment of expensive and guarded cargo. Lost for centuries, even the Spaniards themselves couldn't locate the treasure within the waters after a series of hurricanes shifted the remains and made the location difficult to ascertain.
It was in the 20th century (1985 to be exact) that the ship was finally found by an American Treasure hunter, Mel Fisher. After digging around on the sea bed for five years, Fisher and his crew, with their trusty metal detectors came across the ship and its treasures. The Atocha Treasure included old coins, forty tons of gold and silver (of which there were well over one hundred thousand Spanish silver coins), Columbian emeralds, artifacts and over a thousand silver and gold bars. Unfortunately, it was quickly seized by the state of Florida and it took eight years of fighting in the courts by Fisher for the Supreme Court to rule in his favor.
Even with the interference from the state of Florida, it obviously paid off for Fisher and his crew in the end - No small thanks to his best metal detectors. After all, the value of the treasure that he and his crew had collected was substantial. The monetary value of the Atocha treasure added up to about $450 million dollars. So after five years of searching, then the court battles that dragged out over eight years, the treasure finally became his. It's truly an inspirational story for those who work in the same field, or perhaps even others who work in unrelated fields. Success is possible for everyone, with the properly equiped metal detectors, no matter what you do for a living.
